MASTER CRAFTSMAN OF BIDRI CRAFT (STATE AWARD WINNER)

Bidri craft was developed as a family business among artisan’s families, where all the family members take part in the making of the metal ware. It is practiced mostly in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh these days. Khaleel Ahmed is practicing this ancient craft since more than three decades. Khaleel’s father was an expert in Bidriware and later he passed on this beautiful skill to his son. According to Khaleel the world famous artistic metallic work which was on a decline few decades ago is currently on the revival path following the introduction of several innovative designs and new patterns. Khaleel is happy that this specialized 500 years old metal handicraft has enthralled people with its lure worldwide. Bidriware is a 8 stage process, the basic material used is an alloy of 94% zinc and 6% copper. The oxidizing is done with a solution containing particular type of earth soil from the fort at Bidar in Karnataka State; therefore the name bidri craft is named.
